Spring offers the perfect chance to take a look at our neighborhood with fresh eyes. Improving physical conditions, whether by picking up litter or planting flowers, can make a huge difference in how we feel about our neighborhood. This spring and summer, Riverworks will be offering opportunities to work with your neighbors in maintaining high standards. Riverworks’ Volunteer Coordinator, David Laack, is inviting you to roll up your sleeves and work alongside your neighbors in beautification projects along the Beerline Recreational Trail.
The Beerline Recreational Trail is a neighborhood treasure that runs through parts of Riverwest and Harambee. The aptly named trail was once a railway corridor that supplied essential ingredients to all of Milwaukee’s busy breweries. Years after the rail line closed it devolved into neglected space running behind neighborhood homes, collecting trash, graffiti, and abandoned cars. About 10 years ago, partnerships spearheaded by Riverworks helped to pave the trail for pedestrians and cyclists, removing literally tons of brush and lining it with native prairie flowers and trees. Now we are ready to do one more for the old railbed!
Riverworks is looking for residents who have an interest in the trail to join a neighborhood group, dubbed The Beerliners, to focus on the section of the trail that runs from East Burleigh Street to East Keefe Avenue. The group will focus on standard cleanup efforts including the removal of litter and invasive plant species, but will expand our work to include art installations or landscaping projects that we agree add to the beauty or functionality of the trail. So get together with Riverworks and local landscaping partners, Diggin’ It LLC, and your neighborhood dog walkers, bikers, rollerbladers, skateboarders, power walkers, and in the winter, even Ice Hockey players, to help make the trail a cooler and cleaner place. This will be the first summer the group will hit the trail, so your hands and ideas can carry some important weight!
